One of Our Newest very Exciting Projects:

    Enhancing the WB&A Trail

    Odenton's Babington Green

It has been 5 years since we began the Odenton’s Babington Green project.  Odenton’s Babington Green is located at the beginning of the WB&A Trail at the  intersection of Odenton Road and Piney Orchard Parkway.  What was once a large empty corner of weeds has been transformed into a beautiful place to stop and rest for our local community as well as our visitors on the WB&A Trail.  Odenton has a rich railroad history and the Anne Arundel County Trails system follows the old railroad lines.  From Odenton’s Babington Green one can see the original rails that in 1874 served to make Odenton the hub of railroad activity.  Odenton served as the junction for the WB&A Interurban Railroad and the Annapolis Elkridge Railroad later known as the South Shore Line.  Both railroad lines merged in 1908 to become the WB&A Railroad.  Once again, Odenton will serve as an important urban transportation hub because it is at the nexus of  the WB&A Trail and the South Shore Trail.  Both trails are part of the East Coast Greenway Project, a trail system that will connect Florida to Maine.  Odenton’s Babington Green is at the intersection of these two trails.

The arborvitae of trees planted by BGE volunteers as part of BGE’s, “Plant the Right Tree in the Right Place”, project are maturing.  Thanks to our irrigation system, the crape myrtle trees, rose, viburnum, hydrangea and a variety of other bushes and flowers are flourishing.  As a focal point, a lovely gazebo built by the Amish has been added.  We have started our memorial pathway which extends around the gazebo and to Odenton Road.  We have 2 benches in place and one more on order. Bob Short and his crew from the Department of Recreation and Parks has built a cover for our electrical panel and a beautiful shed to house our supplies as well as spending countless hours to help us plant trees and lay down mulch.  Each Christmas season, our local Girl Scout Troop 96 decorate our Christmas tree and gazebo.

The Odenton’s Babington Green project has truly been a community effort.  Without the donations from many individuals and groups, our project could not have come this far.  No words can express our sincere thanks to our local Girl Scout troops 96, 2127 and 1725 and the many other volunteers that have given their time and hard physical work to help us maintain Odenton’s Babington.

The Friends of Anne Arundel County continue to raise money to complete the pavers pathway and for a new fence.  If you are interested in making a tax deductible donation toward these two ongoing projects it would be greatly appreciated.  If you are interested in purchasing a lasting gift of a memorial brick to be placed at Odenton’s Babington Green please visit “Lasting Gifts” on this website.
