Jonas Green Park
Jonas Green Park is nestled beneath the shadow of the United States Naval Academy Bridge on MD 450 just outside the City of Annapolis, Maryland. Once owned by the state, it is now the property of Anne Arundel County. Named for colonial era Annapolis resident and Maryland’s public printer Jonas Green, this tiny park boasts expansive views of the Severn River, fishing from the old bridge, a place for picnics, quiet interludes, kayaking, canoeing, hiking and bicycling. It is part of the East Coast Greenway, a national trail stretching from Maine to Florida. Amenities Patrons can enjoy amenities such as picnic tables, a fire pit for cooking, indoor public restrooms, a drinking fountain, shade trees, a beach for sunning or launching hand-carried craft such as canoes or kayaks. Fishing is allowed 24-7 on the pier, the extension of the old road bed, but the park itself closes at dusk. Trails system staff now occupies office space. The Visitor Center is expected to open in the near future. Benches will be provided as funds are available (see “Lasting Gifts”).
Due to a strong undercurrent and deep shelf, swimming is not permitted. For those walking dogs, plastic bags are on hand for “doggie clean-up.” As with all county parks, alcohol is prohibited. There is no entrance fee. Two parking areas are available for vehicles, with ample space for those with disabilities. All trails are handicapped accessible. No boats may be launched from the premises unless hand carried. Projects In conjunction with the county, Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails is working to enhance Jonas Green with flower beds, additional shade trees, native plants and benches. The entrance island will be planted in the spring of 2010 with colorful shrubs. A memorial garden area is being designed to the left of the Visitor Center. Crape myrtles will be planted in the upper parking area to soften the hardscape and provide visual interest. The first special “remembrance” bench will be installed honoring long- time trails devotee Joan O’Sullivan.
Joan O'Sullivan
dedication:
Submitted by Diane R. Evans Board Member, Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails
Jonas Green Park’s first memorial bench was dedicated May 29th to Joan O’Sullivan, attorney, champion of the elderly, avid reader and long time devotee of Anne Arundel County Trails. The bench area was designed by Jim O’Farrell of Pendennis Mount. It includes a split rail fence, plantings and a pervious brick pad. The dedication was attended by 30 family and friends from Joan’s childhood, book club, and work at Legal Aid, as well as Board Members of Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails. Funds for the special memorial were raised through personal contributions.
When not working at Legal Aid, teaching elder law at the University of Maryland and writing The Maryland Guardianship Benchbook, A Guide to Consent, and other legal publications, Joan was often seen rollerblading, biking and hiking along the miles of county trails. Jim O’Farrell’s design reflects her love of the tranquility and beauty the trails afford. Its placement atop the hill overlooking the Severn River invites dreams of her youth in southeast Connecticut where she grew up around the water and enjoyed its many fascinations. It would be said by many that Joan “made a difference.” Quiet by nature, but analytical in approach to challenges, Joan dedicated her career to protecting the rights of the elderly and those in need. She also worked diligently to educate the public about legal issues that affect the elderly and those at the end of their lives. A tireless advocate for the poor and disenfranchised, the plaque at her bench memorializes her fight: “A passionate voice for those who could not speak for themselves.” The Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails thanks those supporting this lovely memorial. It is hoped this will be the first of many dotting the park.
